sportSports and the values and principles
of the Council of Europe(2014-2015)

  • A Module - Strasbourg 21 to 24 October 2014
  • B Module - Larnaca, Cyprus - 27 to 29 May 2015

Physical education and sport is still often an arena where violent and war-like language and images abound be it in everyday communication or through the media, where discrimination and stereotypes are common.
And yet, physical education and sport have a potential, readily recognised in many places for the promotion and development of values such as human rights, human dignity and cooperation as well as a constructive, respectful attitude to oneself and to others.

respectRespect - Responsible attitudes and behaviour in the virtual social space(2013-2014)

  • A Module - Strasbourg 12 to 15 November 2013
  • B Module - Koksijde (Belgium) 8 to 10 October 2014

The media environment has changed substantially over the past decades and the ability to use, communicate and interact in a responsible and critical yet beneficial way in this new social space is part and parcel of the competences needed to maintain and further develop our democratic societies. It permeates our lives in a much more intensive way than previously imagined. It plays a central role in most aspects of our lives: from identity building and personal development, communication, construction of reality and negotiation of meaning, information retrieval, social interaction and participation to education and learning, to work and entertainment.

Sex/sexuality education –
Personal development, prevention of discrimination and violence(2013-2014)

  • A Module - Strasbourg 8 to 11 October 2013
  • B Module - San Marino 14 to 16 May 2014

Attitudes and behavior related to sex, sexuality and other sexual aspects of the life of each individual have impact on the right to human dignity, self-determination and personal development and thereby include individual legal responsibilities. Parents, carers, professionals working with children, including teachers and educators, peers as well as the media (broadcast and published) and the Internet, influence the nature of our sexual behaviour.

socmed The use of social media for democratic participation (2012 - 2013)

The Pestalozzi Programme puts media literacy in the context of Human Rights and describes it as the critical, responsible and beneficial use of the media environment. As such it is one of the key competences for sustainable democratic societies, part of a set of basic “transversal attitudes, skills and knowledge of a democratic citizen” as central elements of formal, non-formal and informal education. The media environment has changed substantially over the past two decades and has moved from mass communication on to “mass-to-mass” communication. Media users have moved from consumers of media, recipients of messages to actors, to producers of content of a much wider range than previously imagined.

Description of this trainer training course and resources (training units)

Education for the prevention of violence in schools (2011-2012)

The training course was focused on making the school environment a safe space for learners. If schools are to provide a space for learning and for the personal development of every child, they need to be safe places where everyone can live and work, learn and play without fear. An atmosphere, where each child feels welcome, recognised and respected, where individual needs and learning styles are understood, lies at the core of a safe learning space. The absence of these features makes the space unsafe and prevents children from developing their full potential.

Education for the prevention of discrimination (2011-2012)

The training course was focused on key questions such as: What is discrimination and what are its roots and its effects? What is done about discrimination and what more needs to be done? What must educators do to prevent discrimination? Discrimination is the unfair treatment of and actual behaviour towards an individual based on their belonging (real or imagined) to a certain category or group. Freedom from discrimination is a fundamental human right, or rather it is the basis of all fundamental freedoms and therefore the most fundamental freedom.

Pestalozzi core knowledge, skills and attitudes for all teachers (2010-2011)

The transversal knowledge, skills and attitudes in teacher education: The analysis of the materials that were developed within the Pestalozzi modules between 2006 and 2008, (36 teacher training units), and of descriptions of competences developed in other Council of Europe education projects in areas such democratic citizenship, intercultural education and socio-cultural diversity as well as history teaching show that there is a body of components that are common to all themes or areas of interest.

Diversity of World Views and World Knowledge in the Classroom” (2010-2011)

We live in a time where socially and culturally homogeneous classrooms are a thing of the past – if they have ever existed at all on a wide scale. Diversity is the rule in the societies of today and this finds its reflection in the heterogeneous composition of every classroom. Learners bring with them a diversity of world views and beliefs, of knowledge about the world surrounding them as well as a diversity of capacities and dispositions to name but a few of the key elements.
