The Committee NGOs as advocates for gender equality and women’s rights is organising a webinar on “What makes the Istanbul Convention the gold-standard in combating violence against women and domestic violence? And how can NGOs contribute effectively? ” on 31 January 2023 from 5pm to 6:30 pm (CET) - please register here
With the expert: Mihail Stojanoski, Secretariat of the Istanbul Convention monitoring mechanism
This webinar aims to train NGOs on the uniqueness of the Istanbul Convention as well as on how to contribute effectively in the Monitoring Mechanism.
The webinar will be provided with simultaneous translation for English-French both ways.
Content: With the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention) the Council of Europe has drawn up one of the most recognized conventions and a milestone of international standards in protecting women’s right, widely recognized as the role-model addressing violence against women and domestic violence.
It is the most progressive and ambitious international human rights treaty tackling this serious violation and aiming at zero tolerance.
The uniqueness and the asset of the Istanbul Convention is the comprehensive holistic approach: The 4 P’s (prevention, protection, prosecution, integrated policy) as cornerstones have led to defined, binding legal norms for the states parties to the Convention.
Another crucial part of the Convention is the Monitoring Mechanism. It assesses how well the requirements and provisions of the Convention are put into practice by states parties. The findings and recommendations will help to ensure states’ compliance with the Convention and will guarantee its long-term effectiveness.
The Monitoring Mechanism consists of two pillars: The Group of Experts GREVIO (independent body) and the Committee of the Parties (political body). GREVIO monitors the situation in the countries through visits and draws up reports evaluating the implementation of the Convention. In this process NGOs active in preventing and combating violence against women play a key role in providing information to GREVIO through so called shadow reports.
This webinar aims to train NGOs on the uniqueness of the Istanbul Convention as well as on how to contribute effectively in the Monitoring Mechanism by drafting shadow reports to GREVIO and to whom to turn to, in fact how to become instrumental to report on deficits and gaps in the application of the Convention on the national level.
At the end of the presentation a Q&A will give the participants the opportunity to ask specific questions to our expert and/or to share their knowledge and possibly best practices.
