You may have noticed the three young Japanese cherry trees in front of the Council of Europe, as they have burst into delicate pink blossoms, signaling the arrival of spring. This year their flowers also remind us that Japan celebrates 30 years as a Permanent Observer State of the Council of Europe. And so this double reason for celebration was the occasion for a photo alongside Deputy Secretary General Bjørn BERGE, the Permanent Observer of Japan to the Council of Europe, Ambassador OEDA Shigeta, his team from the Consulate-General, and several Council of Europe pupils of Japanese and sumi-e painting.

Cherry blossoms are perhaps Japan’s most iconic symbol, cherished around the world. Right now, in Japan, people are preparing for Hanami—their traditional contemplation of these fragrant clouds of pink blooms.

The three trees in the photo were gifted by Japan to the Council of Europe in 2021, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Japan’s Observer status. Watch this space for the announcement of further events to celebrate this important anniversary for Japan.
