The Gender Equality Transversal Group meeting in Strasbourg on 04 October 2010, with Karin Nordmeyer in the chair:

1. adopted the Agenda [CONF/TG/GEN(2010)OJ4]

2. approved the Synopsis of the meeting held on 22 June 2010 [CONF/TG/GEN(2010)SYN3] and the Synopsis of the Round table discussion on: “the Burqa: Symbol of oppression or affirmation of identity ?” [CONF/TG/GEN(2010)ROUNDTABLE]

3. Follow-up on activities of the Gender Equality Transversal Group since the last meeting. The group proposed to send a concluding paper on the results of the roundtable discussion on the Burqa to the Parliamentary Assembly. A draft version will be prepared by the Vice-Chair Christiaan Colpaert, Sophie Dimitroulias and Beata Hildebrand to be discussed at the next meeting.

4. Briefing on activities of the Parliamentary Assembly and the Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men (Autumn session 2010)

    The Gender Equality Transversal Group was informed about the documents being discussed in the Autumn Session of PACE and/or relevant to the Transversal Group:
    Doc 12389 Report – Women’s access to lawful medical care: the problem of unregulated use of conscientious objection
    Doc 12378 - Reply from the Committee of Ministers to REC1891(2009) Migrant women: at particular risk from domestic violence
    Doc 12367 – Reply from the Committee of Ministers to REC1899(2010) Increasing women’s representation in politics through the electoral system - Statements by Jose Mendes Bota delivered at the 6th meeting of the CAHVIO, Strasbourg, 27-30 September 2010

5. Debate on strategies to respond to the outcome (Resolution and Action Plan) of the 7th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Equality between Women and Men, 24-25 May 2010, Baku/Azerbajan: ”Bridging the gap between de iure and de facto gender equality”. The group decided to work on the role that men play in the achievement of gender equality, and on the full inclusion of men in all efforts to achieve de facto gender equality. Equal priority shall be given to the continuing empowerment of women. A working group consisting of the Chair, Vice-Chair and Vera John-Mikolajewski will prepare a draft action plan to be discussed at the next meeting.
6. Debate on The Ad-Hoc-Committee on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (CAHVIO). The 2nd draft version of the convention is not available yet, but Mr Mendes Bota, PACE Rapporteur on the convention, has expressed his “satisfaction for the work progress achieved so far and (that) he hopes that a major consensus may be achieved and allows the convention to go on“.
7. Other business

      The Vice-Chair will attend the Forum on the Universality of Human Rights, 21-22 October 2010, Oslo, as the representative of the Gender Equality Transversal Group.
      The annual international Conference of UWE (University Women of Europe) was held on 24-27 June 2010, Bochum-Ruhr/Germany, on the topic: “Education of girls and women in the field of intercultural tension“.
