EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement - Previous Activities
Bosnia and Herzegovina becoms a member of the EUR-OPA Agreement
On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement, the Executive Secretariat has pleasure in announcing that Bosnia and Herzegovina is an official member State of the Agreement as of 20 February 2012. T
hanks to this accession, the Agreement now counts amongst its members all the countries from south-east Europe. Bosnia and Herzegovina consequently becomes the 27th member State of this platform for cooperation in the field of major hazards between the countries of Europe and the south of the Mediterranean set up in 1987. Its field of competence is linked to major natural and technological hazards knowledge, prevention, crisis management, post-crisis evaluation and rehabilitation.
Course on climate risks
10-17 November 2012, Biskra, Algeria

The Scientific and Technical Research Centre on Arid Regions (CRSTRA) in Biskra (Algeria) organised a course on climate risks which took place from 10 to 17 November 2012. The course gathered people who work in the field of major hazards in relation to climate risks.

European Master-level course on Climate Change: impact on health, human environment and water
12-16 November 2012, Strasbourg, France

The course aimed at developing specific knowledge on the main features of climate change, and of its impact on health, human environment and water. The course was held in the Ecole Nationale du Génie de l'Eau et de l'Environnement de Strasbourg (ENGEES), France, from 12 to 16 November 2012. It was devoted to young people with high scientific background from Europe or from member-countries of the EUR-OPA Agreement: engineers, geologists, biologists, students in medicine.

Course on Global Change and Risks to Cultural Heritage
10-14 September 2012, Palais du Louvre - Paris, France

The European University Centre for Cultural Heritage (Centro Universitario Europeo Per I Beni Culturali) organised, with the support of the EUR-OPA Agreement of the Council of Europe, an European Course on "Global Change and Risks to Cultural Heritage". Addressed to young advanced students and professionals, the Course highlighted the risks to Cultural Heritage from : Climate change and Global change, Environmental change, Urban pressure, Energy constraints and Effect of tourism.

International Competition for Children's Paintings
The Directorate General of Fire Safety and Civil Protection (Ministry of Interior of Bulgaria), together with the Ministry of Education and Science and the National Palace of Children, organised a new edition of the International Art Competition for Children's Paintings "I saw the disaster with my eyes". The Competition, conducted under the auspices of the EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement of the Council of Europe, was open to children between the ages of 6 and 18.

Special Session at the 4th International Disaster and Risk Conference (IDRC)
28 August 2012, Davos, Switzerland

A Special Session on Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction : Moving from Theory to Practice was organised at the 4th International Disaster and Risk Conference (IDRC). This session, organized by the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), explored challenges in applying ecosystem-based approaches to DRR and identify the enabling factors and incentives needed to promote and mainstream ecosystem-based DRR in national and local development planning. It was also discussed how ecosystem-based DRR contributes towards achieving socio-ecological resilience.

Publication on Ethical Principles on Disaster Risk Reduction and People's Resilience
The publication is intended to deal both with the direct victims of disasters and with the other parties involved, such as public civil defence organisations, public servants of states affected by disasters and of assisting states, and humanitarian NGOs.
