The European and Mediterranean Major Hazards Agreement (EUR-OPA)
reaffirmed its commitment in the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for
Action 2005-2015 which aims to achieve a substantial reduction of disaster
losses, in lives and in the social, economic and environmental assets, in
participating in the 1st session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk
Reduction organized by the
International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR)
(5-7 June 2007, Geneva, Switzerland).
It is
foreseen that the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction should become
the main global forum for all parties involved in disaster risk reduction,

This 1st
session placed particular emphasis on the need of a strong institutional
basis for the implementation of disaster risk reduction as a national and a
local priority.
A series
of session workshops addressed thematic priorities of the Hyogo Framework
for Action, such as education and safer schools, health and safer health
care centres, environment and ecosystem management, disaster preparedness.
