European and Mediterranean Major Hazards Agreement

Created in 1987, the European and Mediterranean Major Hazards Agreement (EUR-OPA) is a platform for co-operation between European and Southern Mediterranean countries in the field of major natural and technological disasters. Review of actions carried out

In order to present an overall picture of its recent action, the EUR-OPA Agreement has recently brought out two complementary documents:
- the brochure Facing Risks Together, gives a general presentation of the Agreements reason for being, of its fields of activity as well as its functioning;

- the document From Marrakech to Saint Petersburg : 4 years of action of the EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement, takes stock in more detail of the main results achieved during the four years between the two ministerial sessions of 2006 and 2010.
 

Course on Climate Change, Global Change and Cultural Heritage
Ravello, Italy, 3-7 October 2013

The course will cover risks to Cultural Heritage from Climate and Global Change by developing issues as Climate and Global Change impact Vulnerability and Risk and Adaptation Strategies. It will present the results of research from European and International projects and outline future perspectives on risks to heritage induced by climate and global change. The Course is organised by the European University Centre for Cultural Heritage (Centro Universitario Europeo Per I Beni Culturali) in collaboration with the Scientific and Technical Research Centre on Arid Regions (CRSTRA) in Biskra, Algeria, and with the support of the EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement. The deadline for applications is set to 15 June 2013.

International Competition for Children's Paintings

The Directorate General of Fire Safety and Civil Protection (Ministry of Interior of Bulgaria), together with the Ministry of Education and Science and the National Palace of Children, organises a new edition of the International Art Competition for Children's Paintings "I saw the disaster with my eyes". The Competition, which is open to children between the ages of 6 and 18, is conducted under the auspices of the EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement of the Council of Europe. The Competition aims to find out children’s awareness to disasters as well as their knowledge on disasters and capacity to respond in case of emergency. The deadline for sending the paintings is set to 20 September 2013.

4th Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction
19-23 May 2013, Geneva, Switzerland

The aim of the Fourth Global Platform, managed by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), will be to continue the momentum into a durable and sustained effort from all actors (governments, NGOs and civil society, international agencies and organizations, academic and technical institutions, and the private sector) to take shared responsibility in reducing risks and reinforcing resilience in our communities. The Fourth Session will also be an opportunity to progress and consult over a post-Hyogo Framework of Action (HFA). The Session will be held in Geneva at the International Conference Centre from Sunday 19 May to Thursday 23 May 2013.
