Republic of Moldova's Post-Election Conference focuses on strengthening democratic elections

Around 200 high-level representatives from government institutions, political parties, civil society organisations, national and international observer missions, as well as development partners convened around the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Moldova for a two-day Post-Election Analysis Conference.

The event provided a platform to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the Republic of Moldova's 2025 Parliamentary Election.

Participants discussed key challenges and exchanged actionable recommendations to advance Republic of Moldova's electoral system and align it more closely with international democratic standards and European Union integration efforts.

Conference’s central theme of the discussions was the increasing threat of foreign interference in the Republic of Moldova's electoral process. Participants highlighted several risks, such as disinformation campaigns, illegal political financing, and cyber-attacks, all of which can undermine public trust in the election process. The discussions stressed the urgent need for the Republic of Moldova to strengthen its defences against these external threats.

The increasing role of technology in elections was another key area of focus. With more voters turning to digital platforms, experts stressed that the Republic of Moldova must increase its efforts to protect against cyber threats, illegal financing and to ensure that digital tools are not used to mislead or manipulate voters. Key proposals included increasing transparency in political financing to prevent illegal campaign financing, and making voting more accessible to all citizens, both at home and abroad.

The final session focused on ways to increase public trust in the electoral process, and ensure that the country’s elections are free, fair, and secure.

Falk Lange, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, called for continued reforms to safeguard the fairness and security of future elections, reaffirming Council of Europe’s steadfast support for the Republic of Moldova’s reform path and European aspirations, strengthened democracy, inclusive reform, and enhanced accountability within the electoral processes.

The activity was carried out in partnership with the Central Electoral Commission within the Project ”Improving electoral practice in the Republic of Moldova (IEPRM) 2025-2028”, part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2025-2028.
