A panel entitled Towards a Global Standard: The Role of Convention 108+ in Data Protection during the Privacy Symposium of Venice dedicated to Convention 108+ brought together Beatriz de Anchorena (Argentina), Alessandra Pierucci (Italy), Waldemar Gonçalves (Brazil) and Jose Sutton Belarmino II (Philippines). The session, moderated by Kristian Bartholin, focused on the current state of the Convention, its global outreach, and ongoing efforts to promote its ratification and effective implementation.
The discussion highlighted perspectives from different regions on the relevance of the Convention in today’s global data governance landscape, as well as the importance of its entry into force. Brazil and the Philippines, as observer States, underscored their interest in acceding to Convention 108+ and shared recent domestic developments in the field of data protection.
Fireside Chat: Reinforcing International Cooperation between the GPA and Convention 108
Beatriz de Anchorena, in her capacity as Chair of the Convention 108 Committee, took part in a panel discussion alongside Philippe Dufresne, Privacy Commissioner of Canada and President of the Global Privacy Assembly.
The high-level dialogue gave a glimpse on a potential strategic cooperation between the Committee of Convention 108, the only legally binding international instrument in the field of privacy and personal data protection, and the Global Privacy Assembly, which brings together more than 130 data protection authorities worldwide.
