The approval of the Additional Protocol to Convention 108, impacts and opportunities for Uruguay

Uruguay, which was the first non-European State to become a member Party to Convention 108, has taken another step towards standardising the protection of personal data in the world. The Uruguayan Parliament has voted in favour of ratifying the Modernisation Protocol of Convention 108 (best known as Convention 108+).

On Thursday 27 May 2021, Patrick Penninckx, Head of the Information Society Department at Council of Europe, met with the Uruguayan Unit for the Regulation and Control of Personal Data in a video conference to celebrate the event.

The deposit of the instruments of ratification will thus be the last step necessary for Uruguay to become a State Party to Convention 108+ when it enters into force.
