 FRANCE and EUROPE

Relation to Strategy 21 Recommendations:

K3 - Encourage creativity to capture the attention of the heritage audience

Time span of the initiative:

1st weekend in May

Brief description of the initiative:

For more than four centuries opera has been a European art par excellence, a shared artistic heritage where all the arts come together: music, singing, theatre and dance.

In 2018 the focus is on dance.

Aurélie Dupont, dance director at the Paris National Opera, will preside over this year’s Tous à l’Opéra!

Every year opera house teams invite the public at large to cross their thresholds. Tous à l’Opéra! confirms the public’s fascination for this event, which has attracted over a million visitors over the years. This success has made the opera teams more determined than ever to attract as broad and varied an audience as possible. The programme offers many possibilities, free of charge and accessible to all: public rehearsals, concerts, lyrical karaoke, costume and make-up workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, etc. This year’s theme spotlights dance.

At the initiative of the Réunion des Operas de France (ROF), in partnership with Opera Europa, 25 opera houses in France will open their doors free of charge, together with 25 European countries, as part of the European Opera Days.

Since 2007 25 European countries have all taken part in this operation thanks to Opera Europa, the European association of opera companies and festivals, which currently has 175 members in 43 countries. Its aim is to form a network of its members to facilitate information sharing and co-operation on the different aspects of opera management, amongst other things by organising talks on various themes and specialised seminars, and creating online tools.

Opera Europa also launched Opass, the European opera passport, which enables opera fans under 31 years of age to discover outstanding productions at affordable prices.

Tous à l’Opera! has been awarded the “European Year of Cultural Heritage” quality seal.

Objectives of the initiative:

  • To encourage public interest in opera
  • To provide its members with a network to facilitate information sharing and co-operation on the different aspects of opera management

Brief assessment of the initiative’s results:

“Tous à l’Opera!” has attracted over a million visitors over the years
