Creation of the network of Italian Faro communities

The Italian network of Faro Convention communities was established in Venice at the Italian Office of the Council of Europe, directed by Luisella Pavan-Woolfe. Inspired by the Council of Europe's Faro Convention on the value of cultural heritage for society, it brings together number of heritage communities from Naples (Molo San Vincenzo), Rome (Centocelle Alessandrino Torre Spaccata), the province of Padua (Azergrande and Candiana), Venice, Forlì, Cervia, Treviso, Accumoli and Fontecchio (Abruzzo), among others. Furthermore, it also gathers representatives from associations, local institutions, universities and research centres, that are experimenting on the ground the principles of access, participation and use of tangible and intangible cultural assets by citizens in their respective territories.

The network has decided to collaborate on the issues of education of young people for cultural heritage, awareness and training of citizens and sustainable development of the local economy through the construction of cooperatives and other forms of cultural enterprises.

Examples of initiatives so far implemented are: the recovery of the historic pier of San Vincenzo in Naples, the activation of Sicilian cultural basins for young people, the creation of artistic residences in earthquake zones, the organization of many heritage walks throughout Italy to make known to new generations the legacy of rural tradition, the organization by the Regional Council of Veneto of the competition "The Veneto for me" to raise awareness in schools about the local cultural traditions.

In anticipation of the ratification of the Convention by Italy, many patrimonial communities are developing a set of actions, valuing specific aspects of cultural heritage and wishing to pass on to future generations in the framework of public action.
