The situation of deported Ukrainian children and possible European action will be the focus of a conference organised by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Committee on Social Affairs and the Eduskunta (Parliament of Finland) in Helsinki on 15 May 2025.
The conference will be opened by the Speaker of the Eduskunta, Jussi Halla-aho, and PACE Vice-President Miapetra Kumpula-Natri (Finland, SOC). Keynote speakers include EU Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath (video message) and PACE Secretary General Despina Chatzivassiliou.
The conference, which will bring together different representatives of European parliamentary assemblies, will give the participants the opportunity to coordinate their joint actions in support of children deported to the Russian Federation and Belarus. Subjects to be discussed include accountability and restoration of justice regarding the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children, and the modalities for their possible return, as well as their future needs, rehabilitation and reintegration.
Other participants include Olena Khomenko (Ukraine, ECPA), Chair of the PACE Parliamentary Network on the situation of the children of Ukraine; Pia Kauma, President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly; Victoria Litvinova, Acting Prosecutor General of Ukraine; Ewa Kopacz, Vice-President of the European Parliament (video message); Dariia Zarivna, Operational Director of the Bring Kids Back UA Initiative; and Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjord Gylfadóttir, Council of Europe Special Envoy on the situation of the children of Ukraine, and Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights (online).
