Monday evening, in the framework of Les Arcs Film Festival, the Eurimages Lab Project Award of €50 000 went to the project White on White by Theo Court. The jury was composed by Gaia Furrer (Head of Programing for Venice Film Festival's Giornate degli Autori), Trevor Groth (30West) and Alex Traila (Romanian representative to Eurimages).
Produced by Jose Alayon from the company El Viaje Films (ES) and co-produced by Pomme Hurlante Films (FR), Don Quijote Films (CL) and Kundschafter Films (DE), this historical drama was shot at the “end of the world”, in Tierra del Fuego, a snow- and windswept landscape. There, a photographer in search of beauty is carried away by the violence of the colonists, of which he becomes an ambiguous and voluntary witness.
50 000 euros to the film Undergrown directed by Marta Ribeiro and produced by Joana Peralta from the company Videolotion in Portugal. The members of the Jury, among which Sofia Exarchou, film director, Lorenzo Esposito (Cinéma du Réel) and Valeska Neu (Film Boutique), decided to award this film that “surprised them by its talent, passion and humanity and its effort to change our perception of Time and Space, creating a unique and visionary style”. The Jury of the official section of the Thessaloniki Film Festival, awarded a special mention to the film Smuggling Hendrix, by Marios Piperides, a co-production supported by Eurimages between Cyprus, Germany and Greece.
The next Eurimages Lab Project Award will be awarded in the framework of the Work-In-Progress session of the Les Arcs Film Festival on 16-17 December.
Moreover, the Norwegian Film Critics Award went to the co-production Border (SE, DK) by Ali Abbasi, supported by Eurimages.
The next Eurimages Lab Project Award will be awarded in the framework of the Agora Works In Progress at the Thessaloniki Film Festival on 8-9 November 2018.
The Jury composed of David Kořínek, Dorien van de Pas for Eurimages and Christoph Terhechte was convinced by the pitch and the images which correspond perfectly with the introduction. This film directed and written by Adele Tulli was produced by Valeria Adilardi, Laura Romano and Luca Ricciardi. Normal meditates on the everyday constraints of gendered reality, producing a poignant reflection on a current and crucial matter. See the press release.
Last but not least, the Crystal Globe for Best Feature Film at the 53rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival went to the new Eurimages-supported film by recognised director Radu Jude, entitled I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians (RO, CZ, FR, BG). The film, made in the co-production with the Czech Republic, among others, reconstructs a ghastly incident and ingeniously updates Hannah Arendt’s incisive work on the banality of evil. Employing an uncompromising narrative form à la Godard, it demonstrates that committing brutal acts is not the only path to barbarism, for even a mere stunted conscience is enough to lead a person to it. The Grand Jury also awarded a Special Mention to two Eurimages-supported films, one for the Russian co-production film Jumpman (RU, IE, LT, FR) by Ivan Tverdovsky and one for the Slovenian co-production film History of Love (SI, NO, IT) by Sonja Prosenc.
