In order to adapt to the new realities of an increasingly connected world, and to strengthen the effective implementation of the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, it appeared necessary to modernise this landmark instrument.
The Protocol amending the Convention (CETS n°223) adopted on 18 May 2018, which reaffirms the essential principles enshrined in 1981 and integrates new safeguards, was open for signature on Wednesday 10 October 2018. The official ceremony, with signature by 21 Parties to the convention, took place with the participation of the Secretary General, Thorbjørn Jagland and the Chairperson of the Committee of Ministers, Marija Pejčinović Burić.
