On October 29, 2024, European Justice Day was celebrated at the Trebinje Basic Court, one of the pilot courts of the BiHSEJ project, with the theme "Justice and Environmental Protection." Legal professionals, including the Court’s President, Ms. Milica Stanković Bojić, but also Mr. Admir Suljagić, Director of the Secretariat of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HJPC BiH), and Ms. Svjetlana Milišić Veličkovski, Judge at the Supreme Court of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s representative to the CEPEJ, participated in the event’s opening ceremony.
Local community representatives were also present to discuss the critical role of justice in protecting environmental rights. The first panel, entitled “The Right to a Healthy Environment,” brought together judges and legal experts to present the legal frameworks and challenges related to environmental protection in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A second panel focused on access to justice, highlighting CEPEJ’s work on enhancing the quality of justice to promote access to justice, and showcased the CEPEJ Crystal Scales of Justice Prize, with particular attention to the Cypriot initiative “Kids in Court Game (KiCGame),” the laureate of the last edition.
On October 30, 2024, a workshop was held on sustainable communication strategies for the pilot courts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This event followed a previous workshop on the same topic and was led by CEPEJ expert Jaša Vrabec (Slovenia). Participants examined communication objectives, tools, crisis management, and strategies for effective public engagement, with contributions from the courts of Livno, Trebinje, Cazin, Brčko, and Sokolac. Discussions and practical exercises were also organised to address communication challenges and identify solutions aimed at increasing transparency and enhancing public trust in the judicial system.
This activity was organised by the BiHSEJ action “Strengthening the Efficiency and Quality of Justice in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiHSEJ)” in the framework of the European Union/Council of Europe joint programme Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye (Horizontal Facility III), co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
