The President of the CCJE supports the initiative of the International Association of Judges (IAJ)

The President of the CCJE, Judge Leonie Reynolds (Ireland), supported the initiative of the International Association of Judges (IAJ), which has an observer status to the CCJE, for the establishment by the United Nations of 11 January as the “International Day of Judicial Independence - 1000 Robes March”. This important initiative is considered by the IAJ as a symbol of universal value of democratic society and importance of judicial independence for democratic principles and the rule of law.

The IAJ, which also has an observer status to the United Nations, brings together 94 national associations or representative groups of judges from five continents and aims at safeguarding their independence as well as the constitutional standing of judicial authorities, developing the dialogue and exchange of views among judges from its member states, examining the  problems that judges face, whether at global, regional or national level, seeking for the best solutions and performing other functions as necessary for its objectives.

For any further information on the above-mentioned initiative of the IAJ, its Secretariat can be contacted by writing to [email protected].
