10th annual meeting of the Secretary General with the Heads of the monitoring and advisory bodies of the Council of Europe

The President of the CCJE, Judge Anke Eilers, participated in the 10th Annual Meeting of the Secretary General with the Heads of the Monitoring and Advisory Bodies, which is aimed at ensuring a regular dialogue and exchange of views among monitoring and advisory bodies on their contribution to the future work of the organisation, as well as on other topics of common concern and relevance for their operation.

Judge Eilers underlined the importance of an independent judiciary in the member states in order to uphold human rights and the rule of law. She highlighted in particular the interdependence between democratic culture and legal culture, and with respect to the latter the important role of all members of the civil society in creating their legal culture and of educating the younger generations. She recalled in this context the contribution that is being made by the CCJE, which is a unique body developing soft law standards governing the status and career of judges in the member States and guaranteeing their independence and impartiality.
