Gran Paradiso National Park

The Gran Paradiso National Park (GPNP), the first Italian national park established in 1922, combines two main targets: nature conservation and cultural and scientific development. The Park includes many different Alpine habitats, from the bottom of the valleys (800 meters of altitude) to the 4,061 meters of the Gran Paradiso peak, hosting an important number of plant and animal species, many of them included in Natura 2000 lists. The park promotes and supports research and monitoring projects on environmental transformations related to climate and human activities changes. The symbol of the park is the Alpine ibex, since the GPNP hosts the last surviving original population in the Alps. The park is twinned with the French Vanoise National Park (on the basis of a “Good neighbouring paper”) with the purpose of establishing cooperative relations in terms of conservation, research and sustainable development.
