The Bern Convention Special focal points for Illegal Killing, Trapping and Trade of Wild Birds met in Tirana (Albania) on 14-15 April 2016 to monitor compliance of states with their obligations regarding protected birds species. Millions of birds are killed each year as a consequence, among other factors, of poor policing against wildlife crime. The Group assessed progress in the implementation of a special plan adopted in 2013 to curb such crime, the “Tunis Action Plan 2013-2020 for the eradication of illegal killing, trapping and trade of wild birds”. It further examined how effective the plan is proving, how governments can report on such crime and how NGOs, prosecutors, police and conservation agencies can collaborate to help bringing offenders to court.
