15 years of anti-trafficking monitoring work: event on the occasion of GRETA’s 50th plenary meeting

The Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) held an event on the occasion of its 50th plenary meeting and 15 years of monitoring of the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.

Bjørn Berge, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Maria Spassova, Chair of the Committee of the Parties, and Helen Lorez-Schweig, Deputy Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to the Council of Europe, made opening statements.

The event included a panel discussion with former GRETA presidents and vice-presidents on the impact of GRETA’s work and its significance for other organisations. Siobhán Mullally, UN Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, and Davor Derenčinović, Judge at the European Court of Human Rights, will be among the panellists.

There was also a discussion about the future of the monitoring of the Convention, including GRETA members, Committee of the Parties members and civil society representatives.

In addition, the event took stock of the 3rd evaluation round of the Anti-Trafficking Convention, with a thematic focus of victims’ access to justice and effective remedies. A presentation was also made of the “Commentary on the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings”, which provides an analysis and interpretation of the Convention’s provisions.
