Robert DUNBAR

Robert Dunbar is Professor of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh. In addition to earning a doctorate at the University of Edinburgh on Scottish Gaelic literature, he has an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, Canada, and an LL.M. with a concentration in international law from the London School of Economics, and has taught law at both Glasgow and Aberdeen universities. He his written widely on the rights of linguistic minorities in international law, on language planning and policy for minority languages, and on law and policy for the Celtic languages. An expert of the Council of Europe, he has worked on the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages for over twenty years. A former member of Bòrd na Gàidhlig (the Gaelic Language Board) and the board of MG Alba (which, with the BBC, operates BBC Alba, Scotland’s digital Gaelic television service) he has also advised Senedd Cymru (the Welsh Parliament) on language legislation for Welsh.
