LOCAL DEMOCRACY WEEK OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE

Short inquiry

The “European Local Democracy Week” (ELDW) is an initiative of the Council of Europe and it is an annual European event where, national and local events are organized by participating local authorities in all Council of Europe member States.

The role of the Council of Europe is to co-ordinate the European dimension of the project, whereas the national and local implementation of ELDW is being supporting by the correspondents designated by the national associations of local authorities.

The ELDW revolves around the will to increase citizens’ knowledge of local authorities improving their democratic participation at a local level.

The local authorities can organize different kinds of activities reaching the purposes through an informal setting that allows to realise a close link between all the actors (citizens, local leaders, local elected representatives)1. This “Week” nevertheless creates main opportunities to stress the importance of the local democracy in the construction of a democratic Europe.

The week selected is around the 15th October to connect this event with the signature of the European Charter of Local Self-Government2.
This event is significant both for local elected representatives and leaders and for the citizens but it is also important for the Council of Europe that through this initiative shall foster its aims.

As for the Civil Society and Democracy Committee, it has been decided (refer to the minutes of the meeting in January 2008) that :
