Strasbourg, 14 December 2011 - The Council of Europe’s Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) has published today its first evaluation report on Bulgaria.
 
 In its report, GRETA welcomes the important steps taken by the Bulgarian authorities to prevent and combat trafficking in human beings. These measures have included the adoption of a specific law to address human trafficking, increased penalties for trafficking offenses, and criminalisation of the use of services of victims of trafficking. Co-ordination of the efforts of relevant actors is ensured through the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, seven local commissions, and a national mechanism for referral and support of trafficked persons.[More…]

 This new joint Council of Europe/United Nations publication was presented at a special launching event in the United Nations headquarters in New York on 13 October 2009 on the occasion of the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Link to launching event

 The study stresses that trafficking in human beings for the purpose of organ removal is a small part of the wider problem of organs, tissues and cells (OTC) and highlights that there is widespread confusion in the legal and scientific communities between the two types of trafficking, which require different solutions.  Executive Summary of the Joint Study [PDF]

Expert Seminar on the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, Madrid, 2-3 December 2008
This seminar was organised under the aegis of the Spanish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (December 2008 – May 2009), in cooperation with the Spanish Ministry for Equality, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation and the Spanish Diplomatic School. The Seminar provided technical assistance on the implementation of the measures contained in the Council of Europe Convention on Action Againt Trafficking in Human beings and promoted further ratifications of the Convention. Proceedings of Seminars and Conferences
The Council of Europe Campaign to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings was launched in 2006 under the slogan Human being – not for sale. The Campaign aimed to raise awareness, among governments, parliamentarians, local and regional authorities, NGOs and civil society, of the extent of the problem of trafficking in human beings in Europe today. A large number of seminars and conferences were organised in the context of this Campaign.

Trafficking in Human Beings : Internet Recruitment
This aim of this study and its preparatory seminar was to learn more about the different methods used by traffickers to recruit their victims via the internet in order to propose appropriate legal, administrative and technical measures and more effective and better targeted awareness-raising.
