Training for the new Prison Study Centre.
On 8-11 May, Council of Europe experts conducted a training seminar for the staff of the Prison Study Centre (PSC). The PSC is the first research institute in the penitentiary and probation field ever established in Georgia. It was set up by the Penitentiary and Probation Training Centre and the Tbilisi State University of Tbilisi in December 2012.
The two Council of Europe experts, Robert Allen (former director of the International Centre for Prison Studies) and Paul English (former executive director of Penal Reform International), trained staff of the PSC on the use of research and analysis to inform policy and practice in the penitentiary field, methods of data collection and managing information, techniques for surveying risks and needs of prisoners, projecting prison population numbers and monitoring the quality of prison life, as well as evaluating programmes to reduce re-offending.
This Council of Europe activity was organised in the framework of Denmark’s Georgia Programme 2010-2013 “Promotion of Judicial Reform, Human and Minority Rights”.
