Council of Europe contributes to annual monitoring of psychiatric institutions in Georgia by the National Preventive Mechanism
On
18-25 April a Council of Europe (CoE) expert participated in the National
Preventive Mechanism (NPM)'s annual monitoring of psychiatric institutions in
Georgia for 2012. The monitoring was conducted by the Office of Public Defender
of Georgia (PDO) within the framework of the PDO's NPM functions. The PDO was
designated as a NPM in Georgia in July, 2009, in line with the Optional Protocol
to the UN Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading
Treatment or Punishment. The report on the results and findings of the
monitoring will be published by the PDO in June 2012. The CoE expert's
participation in the monitoring of psychiatric institutions in Georgia was
arranged within the framework of Denmark’s Georgia Programme 2010-2013
“Promotion of Judicial Reform, Human and Minority Rights.”
