Description

The theme of this year’s European Heritage Days is “To the rescue of monuments! On the trail of walled cities, castles and strongholds”. Such a theme is an invitation to get to know historical fortified architecture and the 1,000-year old history of Polish arms. Monuments of fortified architecture – walled cities, castles, strongholds – which lost their primary functions are mainly now in ruins. The 2009 theme of the European Heritage Days aims to inspire interest in these objects. We hope that this will result in an increase in social awareness regarding protection of military heritage. The catchword “To the rescue of the monuments!” aims to emphasize the significance of monuments to us and to the future generations and therefore to give better understanding of the need to protect them. This year’s European Heritage Days are important for another more reason – the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II falls in September 2009. Cultural events on this year’s theme will contribute to increasing historic awareness and may reinforce a sense of patriotism. As in previous years, all the events will be open to the public. The local organisers are encouraged to prepare special events for the young people and children. Independently in the local initiatives, a competition for young people and children will be prepared at national level.
