Schalun Castle – ruins of stone and concrete

On European Heritage Day 2012, the National Archeological and National Cultural Heritage authorities have interesting things to tell about the legendary «Wildschloss».

The ruined castle of Schalun lies to the north-east of Vaduz at a height of 862 m above sea-level. It was probably built towards the end of the 12th c. and destroyed in the early years of the 14th c. After the last archeological dig, the monument had to be cleaned up and protected with a great deal of concrete in several stages between 1990 and 1993.

Guided tours at 1.00, 2.00 and 3.00 p.m. by Patrik Birrer and Hansjörg Frommelt.

Yellow signs for the «Ruine Wildschloss» trail from Vaduz Post (1 h 15 minutes) or by mountainbike: Rhine Valley Bike Route 48. Sausage and bread snack available at castle.

Journées européennes du patrimoine 2011 :

“Masonry in Mauren” - heritage protection considerations and archeological reflections in regard to the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Mauren.

The church hill of Mauren is associated with several centuries of history. The parish church of St. Peter and Paul is the work of the Princely Building Inspector Laurenz Vogel of Vienna and was completed in 1843. The present appearance of the church dates from the extensive renovation carried out between 1986 and 1988 but under the church foundations there are the masonry remains of a Roman hypocaust heating system of cultural and historical importance in addition to traces of former churches on the same site. The architectural finds and more than 400 graves containing objects of exceptional interest have been archeologically examined and preserved. The relics have been placed under the nave and may be viewed by the general public. Inside the actual church, there are also numerous art treasures and cultural items. This summer, the plaster of the church, which is classed as an historical monument, will receive expert attention since it has deteriorated over the years. The work now being carried out includes the restoration of the entire outer façade.

The Neo-Gothic church of St. Florin was built between 1869 and 1873 on the site of a medieval chapel. With generous financial help from His Highness Prince Johannes II, it was executed according to plans of the Viennese architect Friedrich, Baron von Schmidt (architect of the Viennese City Hall), and officially opened on 5 October 1873. The Princely architect Ignaz von Banko, a pupil of the cathedral architect Schmidt, was Clerk of the Works. With the official opening of the church on the birthday of the Prince, Vaduz was raised to the status of a parish. In the church with its triple aisles and high lancet windows, there is the "Rheinberger organ", built in 1873/74 by the German organ builder Steinmeyer. The disposition for the organ is the work of none less than the famous composer Josef Gabriel Rheinberger of Vaduz.

During the years 1965/66, the parish church was restored in accordance with the liturgical guidelines of the IInd Vatican Council under the supervision of the architect Hans Rheinberger and was extended by the side chapel, the baptistery. The large glass paintings of the Austrian artist Martin Häusle dominating this area also date back to this time. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, various renovation work was carried out. Since 1992, the church is a listed historical building. For 2010, extensive renovation work in the interior and a comprehensive restoration of the organ are planned and this will be open to the public for European Heritage Day on 4 September 2010.
