Intercultural city: Tilburg, Netherlands
Tilburg is a city in the (catholic) south of the Netherlands,
only a few miles from the Belgian border, with over 200,000
inhabitants. Tilburg has a catholic university and several
universities of applied sciences with altogether over 25,000
students (five percent are students from abroad).
Population diversity
Twenty-two percent of the population in Tilburg are migrants according to the definition of the Central Bureau of Statistics: 8,4 % belong to the group of western members of an ethnic minority (which includes Europe, North-America, Oceania, Indonesia and Japan), and 13,5 % are non-western members of an ethnic minority. So 78 % of the Tilburg residents are Dutch.
The biggest groups of non-western members of an ethnic minority come from Turkey (3,6 %), Morocco (2,6 %), the Antilles / Aruba (2 %), Suriname (1,6 %), Somalia (0,5 %), Asia (without Indonesia and Japan) 1,7 %, Africa (without Morocco and Somalia) 1,1 %, and Central- and South-America : 0,4 %.
Because of changing immigration laws, the immigration from non-western countries decreased dramatically during the last years. Most of the non-western members of an ethnic minority come to Tilburg because of family reunion or marriage
