A second Emerald Network evaluation Seminar for Norway

In June 2013, a First Emerald Network biogeographical evaluation Seminar concluded that Norway has to step-up efforts and designate more sites on its territory for joining the Emerald Network under the Bern Convention, in order to ensure proper conservation of habitats and species of European importance protected by the Network.

Based on the results of this first evaluation, the country submitted a new set of 600 new potential Emerald sites in June 2015. As a result, a Second Biogeographical Seminar for Norway took place in Trondheim, at the premises of the Norwegian Environment Agency. It was co-organised by the Norwegian Environment Agency, the European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity (ETC/BD) of the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the Council of Europe. The evaluation focused on species and habitats for which the Norwegian Environment Agency considers its current Emerald Network of 710 candidates Emerald sites as sufficient.

This new evaluation round is a necessary step before candidate Emerald sites can be officially adopted as Emerald sites by the Bern Convention’s Standing Committee. As soon as sites are officially adopted as Emerald sites, the planning of their conservation objectives and management measures can start at national level.
