MOTIVATION

In order for the indivisibility of human rights to be implemented in practice, there has to be a joint and steadfast commitment by organised civil society. The Human Rights Committee of the Conference of INGOs is a forum in which the hugely diverse experiences of the INGO members, branches and partnerships throughout Europe can come together and put forward a strong message to the other members of the Quadrilogue, namely the Committee of Ministers, the Parliamentary Assembly and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. In the wake of the Council of Europe reform, we need to find a more dynamic form of interaction, by optimising use of its legal instruments and its action.

If I am elected, I will ensure that our activities are guided by the aspirations and often underestimated efforts of the victims of violations of human rights. Furthermore, I will suggest that we seek to involve all stakeholders, while not losing sight of the fact that the primary responsibility falls to states and their institutions, guarantors of respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Acknowledging human rights means recognising the equal dignity of each human being and coming up with action, policies and investment on that basis. It is not a question of rectifying countless crises, but rather undertaking a radical review of priorities – with the participation of all those who have had enough of being manipulated in the race for power and the maximisation of profit.

My involvement with the International Movement ATD Fourth World, Chair of the Conference of INGOs from 2004 to 2008 and my training as a lawyer are all valuable experiences for fulfilling the role of Chair or Vice-Chair of the Committee.
