The Faro Convention (Council of Europe Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society) was opened for signature on 27 October 2005 in Faro (Portugal).
To mark this milestone, the Council of Europe and the City of Villeurbanne organised a conference from 9 to 11 October 2025 to discuss about achieved objectives and challenges ahead. Sessions included open conversations about:
• Cultural heritage, tensions and reconciliations;
• Gender equality and heritage narratives;
• Cultural heritage and ecology issues.
Moreover, representatives from the European Faro Convention Network (EFCN) were invited to share their experiences with participants, including the Mayor of Fontecchio (Italy), Sabrina Ciancone, and the Deputy Mayor of Viscri (Romania), Cristian Radu. On this occasion, the City of Villeurbanne officially adopted the principles of the Faro Convention.
The conference, in line with the Faro Convention, offered local authorities, civil society, cultural actors and institutions the opportunity to engage in participatory exchanges and reflect on new creative approaches.
