The Strategy sets the objectives for the organisation’s work towards gender equality over the next six years, in line with the Reykjavik Declaration. Its six strategic objectives include:
The Strategy will be officially launched on 30 May 2024 in Strasbourg, at a high-level conference titled “United around gender equality: making space for women and girls” organised under the Lithuanian presidency of the Committee of Ministers. The event will bring together gender equality experts, government officials, youth representatives, NGOs, civil society and academia. It will be opened by Justina Jakštienė, Vice Minister of Social Security and Labour of the Republic of Lithuania and Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The focus will be placed on a youth perspective to advance gender equality.
The conference will also be marking the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Istanbul Convention and its impact in practice through two panel discussions including with frontline professionals.
In March 2019, the Committee of Ministers adopted the Recommendation CM/Rec(2019)1 on preventing and combating sexism: it calls for specific action in respect of language and communication; internet and social media; media, advertising and other communication methods; workplace; public sector; justice sector; education institutions; culture and sport and the private sphere. An action page and a brochure give concrete guidance regarding the implementation of the Recommendation.
