On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Local Self-Government in Armenia, a celebration event took place in Yerevan, on 14 November 2016. Addressing the participants, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan stated that “The maturing and improvement of the local self-governance system was greatly promoted by Armenia’s accession to the Council of Europe. In this area, an important guarantee of our progress was the bringing of our legislation in line with the principles of the European Charter of Local Self-Government and its efficient implementation”. Sevdia Ugrekhelidze (Georgia, EPP/CCE), Vice-President of the Congress, represented Congress President Gudrun Mosler-Törnström who addressed a video message welcoming the achievements of cooperation between the Congress and the Armenian authorities, in particular the signature of a roadmap in order to implement the recommendations of the Congress. “I also welcome the set of reforms in the field of local self-government, including on electoral matters, which paves the way for reinforcing local democracy, in line with the commitments taken by Armenia, in the framework of the Charter,” she said.
