Aims
The programme aims to support non-French-speaking students in exile (refugees, those under subsidiary/temporary protection, asylum seekers or anyone who has left their country of origin under duress or by force) who hold at least a secondary school leaving certificate (equivalent to a baccalaureate) to begin or continue higher education in the French university system.
Description
Running across many universities in France, each university programme has particular specialities. Typically each programme includes French language courses, support to develop a professional and academic project, support with university administrative procedures, intercultural and sports activities, and social, psychological and medical support within the university services. Some universities also offer the option to attend other university courses, attend visits locally and access tutoring services. At the end of most, it is possible to take a French exam (e.g. the DELF).
The Maison des Langues program at Le Mans University is an example of such a course. It supports young refugees and asylum seekers by providing language classes which introduce university methodologies and encourage each individual to explore their personal projects. The program offers free French language courses and integration support tailored to "exiled students". With structured academic and cultural assistance, participants can improve their language proficiency to levels B2 or C1, enabling them to pursue higher education in France without needing further certification exams. The program also provides access to workshops, administrative guidance, and professional preparation, seeking to enhance young refugees’ academic and social integration. By combining language education with broader support systems, the Maison des Langues fosters empowerment and inclusion among young refugees.
Results/ Outcomes
