Aims
The SCSIP team has a dedicated aftercare service aimed at meeting the unique needs of separated children as they leave care and support them with their transition into adulthood and independence in Ireland.
Description
The Separated Children Seeking International Protection (SCSIP) service in the Tusla, Child and Family Agency offers a dedicated aftercare service for former separated children aged 18–21, and 23 for those in full-time education. Available based on need, age and length of time in care, supports include needs assessments, aftercare plans, access to education, housing, and advocacy. Drop-in clinics provide guidance, and aftercare workers also support young people in immigration processes, family reunification, and general welfare. Parallel planning is common, addressing scenarios such as receiving status, family reunification, voluntary return, or continued legal processes.
The SCSIP service is also required to prepare an aftercare plan for the child when a need is identified. Eligible children are those who have been in the care of the State for at least 12 months between the ages of 13 and 18. It should be noted, however, that as most unaccompanied minors arrive at 16 to 17 years, some may be ineligible for aftercare.
