Introducing of the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture at Tirana University

Professors and relevant staff of the University of Tirana participated in a round table organized by the Council of Europe, in cooperation with the Institute for European Studies, on the application of the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC) in higher education settings and teacher preparation programmes.

RFCDC constitutes a set of materials that can be used by education systems to equip young people with the competences that are needed to take action to defend and promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and to participate effectively in a culture of democracy.

Participants in the round table were introduced with the findings and recommendations of an assessment carried out with the Council of Europe expertise on the possibility of introducing RFCDC as a part of a standard curriculum in the University education. Discussions converged on the need to review the existing curricula for teacher education to make it more competences-based and aligned with the RFCDC, as well as to ensure a better harmonisation among subjects and modules.

This event took place in the framework of the project "Strengthening Democratic Citizenship Education in Albania” implemented by the Council of Europe and funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency which aims to improve the quality of education in Albania by strengthening democratic citizenship education based on Council of Europe standards and practices.
