Sport and Human Rights Committee - Access to sport for all is a fundamental right

Terms of reference - approved by the General Assembly on 10 April 2024
Chair - Maritchu RALL (European Social Action Network)
Vice-Chair - Christian Saintlezer (European Association of Teachers)
The Committee's primary aim is to highlight the fundamental contribution of sport in the fight against all forms of discrimination. Through continuous, diversified and respectful practice, sport fosters: social integration, individual emancipation, health development, the construction of and respect for the rules of life in society, gender equality through mixed practices, inclusion of all through adapted practices, etc.
Through the actions that will be implemented, the Committee hopes to develop and affirm the ethics of sport.
The Sport and Human Rights Committee will contribute to the work of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS), which provides a platform for intergovernmental cooperation between the public authorities of its member states.
The fight against discrimination through and in sport will take place at two levels and will involve two types of coherent action:
- Axis 1: Combat all forms of hate speech and rejection (racism, homophobia) and all attacks on the ethical practice of sport (doping, violence, corruption).
Contact for Axis 1 - Arthur GARRIDO
- Axis 2: Encourage access to sport and the discovery of its values for those who are most excluded from it due to their disability, social condition (poverty, precariousness), origin (people from immigrant backgrounds), gender or any other form of discrimination.
Contact for Axis 2 - Christian Saintlezer
Sport is a genuine need that forms part of a person's overall support system, promoting encounters, forging social links, contributing to emancipation and the development of citizenship, with values of sharing and respect that influence both physical and mental health.
Education and training will be the priority levers used in the two areas described above. Finally, the Committee will pay particular attention to cross-disciplinary work with other committees and will promote this collaboration.
