Hungary becomes the 30th Party to ratify the Protocol amending Convention 108, known as

Today, 19 October 2023, Ambassador Harry Alex Rusz, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the Council of Europe deposited the instrument of ratification of the Amending Protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data (CETS No. 223), in the presence of the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

Hungary, who has been Party to Convention 108 since 1998, thus becomes the 30th State Party to join the modernised Convention 108 (Convention 108+).

Hungary ‘s efforts supporting this landmark instrument contribute to the acceleration of the ratifications process in the State Parties to the Convention, which counts ten more ratifications since the beginning of 2023 and two more signatures. The minimum threshold to enter into force is 38 ratifications. Convention 108+, which remains the only global international legally binding instrument protecting personal data and the right to privacy, aims at ensuring appropriate protection of all individuals in an ever-expanding digital era, in order to safeguard the respect for dignity and privacy of all and to fully enjoy the right to informational self-determination.
