The Council of Europe is assisting the Georgian prison system to improve the treatment of inmates suffering from mental health problems. The Project “Improving mental health care of persons detained in Georgia” is being implemented as of January 2018 and will last 18 months, until June 2019. The main goal of the project is the development of mental health care services in prison through a systematic approach, revised legislative framework and the strengthening of staff capacity.

A wide range of activities will contribute to achieving the objectives of the project: to strengthen the protection of human rights and improve the treatment, screening, management and rehabilitation of prisoners with mental health problems and to increase the knowledge of staff to provide psychological support to prisoners.

The project is being implemented in close partnership with the Ministry of Corrections, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Office of Public Defender and the civil society organisations.

Mental health nurses play a central role as clinicians, case managers, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners in mental health-care settings in many European countries. The development of the training programme for psychiatric nurses in Georgia alignes national practice to European standards and will increase the nurses’ role as part of multidisciplinary teams that deal with mental illnesses.

The first phase of training sessions on mental health nursing is being organised in Georgia on 19-24 October 2018. The psychiatric nurses, already trained within the same project, are going to share the knowledge acquired in the training of trainers programme with their peers working in penitentiary establishments.

The training programme has been developed and delivered by the Council of Europe within the “Improving mental health care of persons detained in Georgia” project as a part of the Council of Europe assistance to the Ministry of Justice of Georgia in strengthening the capacity of psychiatric nurses on the main principles of mental health nursing.
