At their 1558th meeting, on 29 April, the Ministers’ Deputies decided to submit two candidatures to the Parliamentary Assembly for appointment to the post of Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The Assembly will proceed with the election on 23 June during its summer part-Session [more information …].
The Deputies held their regular exchange of views with Secretary General Alain Berset, as well as an exchange on the Secretary General’s 33rd consolidated report on the conflict in Georgia, with the participation of Mr Lasha Darsalia, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Georgia. The report gives an update on the situation in the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia from October 2025 to March 2026, following the conflict with Russia starting in August 2008.
The Deputies held exchanges of views with:
- Ms Petra Bayr, President of the Parliamentary Assembly, on the results of the 2nd part of the 2026 Session (Strasbourg, 20-24 April 2026) and other Assembly activities [more information …];
- Mr Michael O’Flaherty, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, focusing particularly on his 2025 annual activity report [more information …].
In addition, the Deputies:
- adopted a Recommendation to member States on best practices for the remote and online provision of medicines;
- continued their preparation of the 135th Session of the Committee of Ministers (Chişinău, 14-15 May 2026);
- welcomed the final reports on the implementation of the Neighbourhood Partnerships for the period 2022-2025 with Tunisia and Morocco and approved a Neighbourhood Partnership for the period 2026-2029 with Morocco.
