The CEPEJ contributed to the 24th Annual Symposium on Criminal Law, held in Neum (Bosnia and Herzegovina) from 4 to 6 June 2026, by organising a session entitled ‘The Ethical Use of AI in the Judicial System, the CEPEJ and International Practices’. The session presented the European framework on artificial intelligence, referring in particular to the European Ethical Charter on the use of artificial intelligence in judicial systems and their environment.

This conference, one of the most important annual events for the judicial community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, brought together over 400 participants, including judges, prosecutors, lawyers, academics and law enforcement representatives, to discuss current challenges in criminal justice.

Discussions focused on the key principles guiding the use of AI in the judicial sphere, including respect for fundamental rights, data quality and security, transparency, impartiality and the need to ensure that judicial decision-making remains under human control, as well as the implications of these principles in the context of the judicial system of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The CEPEJ is implementing the action “HFIII: HF 4 - Strengthening the Efficiency and Quality of Justice in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiHSEJ)”, which is part of the joint programme entitled "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye III", co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
