The European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) and the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic are concluding the project “Strengthening the efficiency and quality of the Slovak judicial system

The final conference entitled “Reforms with a view to strengthening the efficiency of the Slovak judicial system and the quality of courts” took place on 9 July 2019, in Bratislava. As part of the conference, Mr Gábor Gál, Minister of Justice and Ms Edita Pfundtner, State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice referred to the results of 28 months of intensive cooperation with the CEPEJ. Ms Lenka Praženková, President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, explained the view from inside the judiciary on the results of the cooperation between national justice stakeholders and the CEPEJ, and on the reforms supported by judges. The milestones in the implementation of the project were the presentation of a thorough evaluation of the Slovak judicial system as regards its efficiency and quality, and as regards the use of cyberjustice tools in February 2018, followed by joining efforts for the implementation of several recommendations for the purpose of improving the functioning of the judiciary (e.g. drafting legislation to introduce the “visiting judge” model, developing the concepts of judicial timeframes and case weighting etc.). Between November 2018 and July 2019 a coaching programme has been carried out to improve the functioning of 6 pilot courts through supporting the implementation of the CEPEJ tools at court level (self-evaluation through the use of key performance indicators and conducting court user satisfaction surveys).

During the conference were presented the national priorities for judicial reforms and the plans for continuing the fruitful cooperation with the Council of Europe and the CEPEJ.

The conference was concluded by a press conference held by the leadership of the Ministry of Justice and the CEPEJ representatives.

* The project “Strengthening the efficiency and quality of the Slovak judicial system” is financed by the European Social Fund.
