Mission of CEPEJ experts to support increased efficiency and quality of the Latvian judicial system

A team of CEPEJ experts conducted a fact-finding mission to Latvia from 4 to 6 July 2017, in view of an evaluation of the Latvian judicial system. The mission launched the the co-operation between the CEPEJ and Latvian Court Administration, which is part of the project “Justice for Growth”, financed by the European Social Fund. Latvian authorities actively implement reforms of the justice sector, in the fields of the selection procedure of candidates, optimisation of the court map, simplification of judicial proceedings and enhancing the use of ICT. CEPEJ experts conducted discussions with representatives of the Ministry of Justice, of the Court Administration, of the Council for the Judiciary, of the Judicial Disciplinary, of the Qualifications and Ethics Committees, of the Judicial Training Centre, judges’ associations etc. They visited the Supreme Court of Latvia and Riga Regional Court. Based on the methodology and tools developed by the CEPEJ, the expert team will draw up an evaluation report including detailed recommendations on the way to further improve the independence of the judiciary, the efficiency of Latvian courts and the quality of their services.
