The 41st CEPEJ Plenary meeting will be held on 4 and 5 December in Strasbourg

Among the many work examined by the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) at its 41st plenary meeting (4-5 December 2023): 2024-2025 activity programme, artificial intelligence in the field of justice, online ADR.

At its 41st plenary meeting to be held in Strasbourg on 4 and 5 December, the CEPEJ will adopt its programme of activities for 2024-2025, and will renew the terms of reference of its working groups on evaluation of judicial systems (CEPEJ-GT-EVAL), quality of justice (CEPEJ-GT-QUAL), judicial time management (CEPEJ-SATURN) and cyberjustice and artificial intelligence (CEPEJ-GT-CYBERJUST). This new Roadmap for the CEPEJ will focus on the guarantees to be given to the justice system currently being digitised.

The CEPEJ will also examine, with a view to their adoption, guidelines on online alternative dispute resolution, prepared by the CEPEJ-GT-CYBERJUST Working Group. These aim to ensure that the artificial intelligence mechanisms increasingly used in this context do not jeopardise the principles of a fair trial.

The work on implementation of the European Ethical Charter on the use of artificial intelligence will also be at the heart of the discussions with the presentation to the CEPEJ, with a view to its adoption, of an Evaluation Tool aimed at verifying compliance with the 5 principles of the Charter by artificial intelligence tools used in the field of justice.

The CEPEJ-SATURN Working Group will in particular present a Report on case weighting cases for public prosecutor's offices and a project to set up a Database on European practices in reducing the backlog of cases.

The Working Group on evaluation of judicial systems (CEPEJ-GT-EVAL) will take stock of the current 2024 evaluation cycle (2022 data).

The CEPEJ will begin its work with a study session entitled "Artificial intelligence at the service of justice - concrete examples of implementation" during which 4 countries will present their latest tools. The winners of the 2023 edition of the Crystal Scales of Justice will also be present to give a detailed presentation of the winning initiatives.
