Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland to attend the first EU Eastern Partnership and Home Affairs ministerial meeting in Luxembourg

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Thorbjørn Jagland, will attend the first EU Eastern Partnership and Home Affairs ministerial meeting in Luxembourg, on 7 October. The meeting, co-chaired by the Lithuanian Presidency of the European Union and the European Commission, will gather the Ministers of Justice of the 28 EU Member states and six Eastern Partner countries to discuss justice, mobility and migration and security issues. The Secretary General will share with the Ministers the results of the joint Council of Europe and European Union project on “Enhancing Judicial Reform in the Eastern Partnership Countries”. The aim of the joint project, which has been implemented by the Council of Europe since March 2011, is to support the on-going process of reforms in the Eastern Partners, with a view to increasing the independence, efficiency and professionalism of judges. In particular, the project assessed to which extent the legislation and practice of the Eastern Partners meet Council of Europe’s standards, and it reviewed the efficiency of the judicial systems based on CEPEJ methodology and tools.
