Assessing the potential impact of artificial intelligence systems on human rights: a new mission for the CEPEJ's Artificial Intelligence Advisory Bureau (AIAB)

The CEPEJ's Artificial Intelligence Advisory Board (AIAB), tasked with guiding the CEPEJ on the current challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI) systems applied to the judicial environment, met on May 13, 2024, in its new composition. In particular, the AIAB is responsible for preparing the piloting of the Assessment tool for the European Ethical Charter on the use of AI in judicial systems and their environment, which the CEPEJ adopted last December. This assessment tool provides a set of checks that decision-makers within judicial systems should follow when developing and/or using AI in judicial systems and their environment, in compliance with the CEPEJ Charter. Piloting will focus on the specific tools that are or need to be implemented. The AIAB also decided on the next series of cyberjustice and AI tools applied in the field of justice to be published in the CEPEJ's “Resource Centre on Cyberjustice and AI”. This Resource Centre presents an overview of these systems and tools, in particular with a view to a closer examination of their risks and benefits for professionals and end-users, in line with the AI Ethical Charter. The AIAB is made up of five members, appointed for two years, who are specialists in new technologies: Katie Marie Atkinson (United Kingdom), Jehanne Dussert (France), Alfonso Peralta Gutierrez (Spain), Matthieu Quiniou (France) and Marek Świerczyński (Poland). Their next meeting will take place online in September.
