The Working Group examines draft Opinion on the importance of judicial well-being for the delivery of justice

The CCJE Working Group met in Oslo on 2-4 July 2025 to discuss draft Opinion No. 28 (2025) on the importance of judicial well-being for the delivery of justice prepared by the CCJE expert, Ms Lucinda Soon (United Kingdom), based on the guidance given by the Working Group and the structure developed at its meeting in April 2025.

The Working Group examined and revised the draft in the light of its discussions. It agreed on the need of defining judicial well-being and identifying the challenges of judicial work including workload and time pressures, funding challenges, exposure to traumatic material, political interferences, threats to personal safety and security and other challenges. It also agreed on the need to refer, in the context of judicial well-being, to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other assistive technologies in the work of judges in ways that maintain and enhance judicial independence and impartiality. The Opinion will also highlight initiatives to protect judicial well-being and provide relevant recommendations.

The members of the Working Group warmly thanked the Norwegian Courts Administration for inviting and organising the meeting in Oslo, including a visit of the Working Group to the Supreme Court of Norway, as well as Judge Wiggo Storhaug Larssen (Norway), member of the CCJE Bureau, for his contribution to the work of the CCJE, his facilitation of the present meeting and his warm welcome.
