Conservation of the Western hazel grouse (Tetrastes bonasia rhenana)

The complaint was submitted in 2021 by the Luxembourgish association natur&ëmwelt on the conservation status of the Western hazel grouse (Tetrastes bonasia rhenana), a regionally endemic bird in west Europe, which faces imminent worldwide extinction as only a tiny population remains in the Vosges Mountains, France as it already went extinct in Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

A recent survey only found five specimens left in the Vosges Mountains and, according to the complaint, the true population size might not be very much higher. The complaint states that captive breeding should be applied to save the species, but that the French authorities declined the application by Luxembourg and Germany to collect some eggs for captive breeding.
