Workshop on Prohibition of Discrimination in Working Life in the Light of Constitutional Court Judgments

On 18 and 19 December 2023, a Workshop on “Prohibition of Discrimination in Professional Life in the Light of Constitutional Court Judgments” was held in Ankara with the participation of representatives from the Constitutional Court, Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye, public institutions and organisations, members of the bars, academics, and students of Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University.

Ms Pınar BAŞPINAR, Head of Operations in the Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara, stated in her opening speech that the workshop - the second of which was held today - is one of the 20 activities aimed at raising awareness about the case-law of the Turkish Constitutional Court. She added that these activities aim to bring together all institutions and organisations, universities and non-governmental organisations acting in the fields of justice, human rights and the rule of law for permit an exchange of information and experience to ensure effective implementation of the judgments of the Constitutional Court in Türkiye.

Other opening speeches by Prof Ali Cengiz KÖSEOĞLU, Rector of Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University and Mr Kadir ÖZKAYA, Vice President of Turkish Constitutional Court also stated that the principle of equal treatment of workers at the workplace is an obligation based on the principle of equity recognised by contemporary labour law.

The workshop tackled important issues such as conceptual and legal perspective on prohibition of discrimination in general and discrimination based on gender at work. The participants had an opportunity to join a fruitful discussion on the second day of the workshop.

The Joint Project on “Supporting the Effective Implementation of Turkish Constitutional Court Judgments in the Field of Fundamental Rights” is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe. The Turkish Constitutional Court is the end beneficiary of the Project.
